Roger Baker Wooten

August 11, 1943 — December 22, 2020

Mr. Roger B. Wooten, age 77, passed away Tuesday December 22, 2020 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Sunday December 27, 2020 at 2:00PM at Lake City Cemetery in Lake, MS. Brother Jess Dilly of Lake Baptist Church will officiate the services.

Roger Wooten was a loving father, sacrificial in nature, who tried to be a better person every day. While not overtly religious, he had a reverence for God and encouraged his children to do the same. His calm demeanor and ability to properly handle stressful situations was inspiring. He knew how to strike a perfect balance between being a disciplinarian and when to extend leniency and patience.

Roger also had an unmatchable work ethic, he learned that from his family, starting from an early age. He was energized by hard work and tried to instill those values to those around him. His entrepreneurial vision guided him to see business opportunities in various trades.

In his earlier years, he immersed himself in a construction business, building bridges in Miami. He returned to MS to own and operate a concrete business, several convenience stores including the “Beer Barn” gas station and an oil company. He later moved to Colorado in hopes of retiring, but his non-stop industrious mentality led him to cattle ranching. Everywhere Roger went, he touched the lives of countless people.

But it was his love for his family and friends that brought him back to his roots in MS. Without skipping a beat, he started a car lot business, did more construction, and oversaw several rental properties.

As busy and successful as Roger was, he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need. Those who knew him well, saw beyond the “successful”, “prominent businessman” label. They would agree, he was an excellent listener, nurturing in nature and a powerful motivator. He fostered positive work habits in others and encouraged them to excel. He was not judgmental but allowed people to blossom in their time. He was a kind and generous soul. He leaves an indelible legacy of impacting lives every place he ventured.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Louis Wooten and Winnie Pace of Lake, MS; his brothers, Louis, Eugene and Wilson Wooten of Lake, MS; his sister, Patricia Beckwith of Belzoni, MS.

Roger is survived by his two sons, Richard Wooten of Lake, MS and Lance Wooten of Forest, MS; his brother Will Wooten of Jackson, MS; three sisters, Tommie Stroud of Jackson, MS; Mary Blackburn of New Orleans, LA and Sarah Mabry of Lake, MS; two grandchildren, Kaleigh and Madison Wooten of Sebastopol, MS as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
