Mrs. Sturgis was born to the late Mr. & Mrs. Ollie Lloyd of Morton, MS. She received her bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University.
Upon graduation from Alcorn, Mrs. Sturgis began her teaching career at W. H. Holtzclaw School in Crystal Springs, MS, where she met and married her husband. Most of her career was spent as a teacher at Morton Attendance Center, first at Bettye Mae Jack Middle School and then at Morton High School.

She was faithful to Christ and joined Pleasant Gift M.B. Church at an early age. For many years, Mrs. Sturgis served as the President of the Pleasant Gift Women’s Missionary Auxiliary and, later, as a member of the Mothers’ Board for the Church. Mrs. Sturgis was also a member of the Scott County District Missionary Baptist Association with Rev. Charles E. Bell, moderator. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Gift M.B. Church until her health failed.

Mrs. Sturgis was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a sociable and outgoing person who loved people and was very active in the church and her community. She was fiercely loyal and loved her family, friends, and fellow church members. Mrs. Sturgis was always willing to help anyone in any way that she could.
