Joe C. Smith, age 83, went to be with the Lord on September 1, 2010, surrounded by his family at home in Morton, MS. Visitation will be at Wolf Funeral Service in Morton from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, September 2, and at 1:00 pm on Friday. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 3, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in the Springfield Baptist Church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Koonce Smith, and one brother, Benny (June) Smith of Laurel, MS and one sister, Ava Ann Arinder of Sherman, TX. Additionally, Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Carolyn (Danny) Wade of Morton, Leonard (Martha) Smith of Columbus, MS, and Estelle (Don) Watts of Pearl, MS.; his daughter-in-law Linda Smith Sutton of Tuscaloosa, AL; his grandchildren Steven (Rebekah) Wade of New Orleans, LA, Emily (Jay) Murphy of Petal, MS; Josie (Scott) Guerry of Madison, MS, Missie Smith of Columbus, MS, Amy (Josh) Martin of Pearl, MS, Eric (Heather) Watts of Richland, WA, and Jessalynn (Michael) King of Tuscaloosa, AL; and his great-grandchildren Grace and Presleigh Wade of New Orleans and John Riley Murphy of Petal, MS.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son Joe William Smith of Tuscaloosa, AL and his grandson Jeffrey Louis Wade of Morton.
Mr. Smith was born in Marvel, Arkansas, on July 20, 1927. Mr. Smith served his country in the Air Force. He was a retired US Postal Service employee and enjoyed spending time with the NARFE group. Mr. Smith was a member of Springfield Baptist Church and had served in numerous capacities over the years, including teaching Sunday School and serving as a deacon. After his retirement, Joe and Irene served as missions volunteers in numerous locations such as Glorietta Baptist Assembly, Central Hills Baptist Retreat, and Montana.
Services will be officiated by Rev. Don Wilson and Rev. Marty Wilson and the pallbearers will be Steven Wade, Eric Watts, Michael King, Jay Murphy, Scott Guerry, Josh Martin, and Tim Pitts.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to NARFE Alzheimer’s Fund, c/o LaNita Webb, 792 Woodland Dr N, Forest, MS 39074 or to Springfield Baptist Church, 3285 Springfield Road, Morton, MS 39117 in Mr. Smith’s memory.
