Mavis Marie Tyson

Mavis Marie Tyson passed away on August 20, 2025, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born on February 2, 1940, in Philadelphia, MS. Mavis has been married to Lynn Tyson, who has been a devoted husband for over 33 years. She has six children, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and who are all going to miss her very much.

Mavis graduated from the American Beauty Academy in Mobile, Alabama, and was a cosmetologist for over 40 years. She loved sewing, quilting, working in her yard, sitting on her porch, drinking coffee, and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Gary Lynn Tyson, and her children Charles (Bo) Harrison (Dawn) of Clyde, NC, Glynda Grandquest of Mobile, AL, Shalaine Scott (Kenneth) of Kosciusko, MS, Michelle Jones (Derek) of Flora, MS, Steven Tyson (Rachel) of Brandon, MS and Wendy Snow (Rodney) of Spring Hill, Fl.

She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren Chuckie, Ashley, Kelley, Morgan, Lindsay, Abby, Hannah, Logan, Evan, Jordan, and Jacob, and thirteen great-grandchildren who all knew her as “Nana” or “Great Nana”.

She is also leaving behind two sisters who were her best friends and were affectionately known to her as her “Tutters” Jimmie Atkinson (Jimmy Joe) of Morton, MS, and Mittie Barfoot (Bob) of Pearl, MS. She is also leaving behind many nieces and nephews whom she loved.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Ella Pilgrim, her brothers, Billy Pilgrim, James Pilgrim, Prentis Pilgrim, and Edward (Joe Bob) Pilgrim, and two great-grandchildren, Briggs and Lew Beckett.

Her services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Clifton Baptist Church, 5034 Clifton-Hillsboro Road, Forest, MS. Visitation will begin at 10:30, and the services will begin at 12:00, with graveside to follow at Mount Olive Community Church cemetery.
