Lanny Dale Caudill

Lanny Dale Caudill was born on October 13, 1949, in his family’s home tucked into the hills of Cranston, Kentucky. On July 31, 2026, he closed his eyes for the last time at his home in Forkville, Mississippi. Surrounded by his family, he left his earthly home and entered the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Today, he rejoices with the Savior he faithfully followed all the years of his life.

Lanny loved to tell stories, so let me tell you his. Born the son of a carpenter’s son, he grew up learning to build, to farm, to cut and dry tobacco, and in his spare time, to pull the most unbelievable pranks on relatives and neighbors. A natural storyteller, he could recount the wild tales of his childhood with such joy that everyone listening felt like they were right there beside him. Whether it was the time he put his neighbor’s furniture up in the trees or the time he and his cousin built a hotrod and outran the police, Lanny always had a story ready to share.

From his parents, he learned to work hard, play hard, love the Lord from his mother, and fear God from his father. When the Vietnam War broke out, he was just 17. An Air Force recruiter who hunted on his family’s land told him he was too smart to join the Army, so Lanny enlisted in the Air Force and began a 22-year career serving his country. His service carried him across the world: the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and all over America. Along the way, he found the love of his life in Mississippi, and together they spent 56 years building a family and dragging two children along on every adventure.

After retiring from the Air Force, Lanny continued serving his country as a Federal Civil Servant in Civil Engineering until his second retirement in 2013. Through all those years, he remained faithful to his local church, serving as a deacon, youth pastor, and the ever-dependable church handyman. When he finally retired for good, he moved to Mississippi to build his cabin in the woods, a place of peace, quiet, and the beauty of nature. He became a devoted member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his death. If one word marked Lanny’s life, it was love. His love for his Lord, his family, his country, and his community was unwavering. He was a gentleman among gentlemen, hardworking, quick to serve, quick with a joke, and never ashamed of his tears. Few people live a life so full, so rich, so deeply rooted in love both given and received. Lanny lived such a life. He ran well “the race set before him, and he has received the prize.” You may have heard that he died on July 31, 2026, but that is not the end of his story. He is more alive today than he has ever been. He is in the presence of Jesus, awaiting the resurrection, and I imagine he is already telling some truly great stories in heaven.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis and children Lea Weinsheimer and Jeremy (Laura) Caudill. Grandchildren; Patrick Caudill, Alicia Caudill, Jeremy Caudill, Kara Caudill, Celeste Caudill, Benjamin Caudill, Samuel Caudill, Helen Caudill. Great-grandchildren: Athena Caudill, Jackson Caudill, Cora Holcombe, Iris Caudill, Sam Holcombe, Landon Adcox, and Bryar Adcox. One sister, Myrtie Gibbs.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 04, 2026, from 6 pm to 8 pm, and on Wednesday, August 05, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:45 am. Funeral Service will follow starting at 11:00 am, held at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Bro. T. J. Porter, Bro. Charlie Jones and Bro. T.J. Bates officiating.
