James Rodney Russell

Apr 24, 1953 — Aug 5, 2026

On August 5, 2026, James Rodney Russell humbly bowed at the feet of Jesus. To know Rodney was to love him.

Rodney was born on April 24, 1953, to James and Laurie Russell. He lived a life centered on his faith, loving Jesus first, his family second, and his beloved Tennessee Volunteers close behind.

Rodney never missed an opportunity to share his love for Jesus. He was a devoted prayer warrior and faithfully served for many years as an Elder at Embrace Church. His unwavering faith was evident in the way he loved, encouraged, and cared for those around him.

He cherished traveling with his bride, Julie, and together they found their happy place in Alaska, visiting the state five times. Rodney loved cooler weather, and on fall Saturdays, you could always find him settled into his recliner, cheering on his Tennessee Volunteers.

An athlete at heart, Rodney loved playing sports, coaching, and teaching his children the games he enjoyed. Later, he found great joy sitting in the stands, enthusiastically cheering for his grandchildren. Above all else, he faithfully taught them and demonstrated the love of Christ through both his words and his example.

Rodney was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Julie Russell; his son, Nathan Russell; his parents, James and Laurie Russell; and his brother, Danny Russell.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, LaRue Russell (Deborah) and Stacey Mitchell (Brian). He would proudly say he was a blessed Pop to Dustin Mitchell (Brinkley), Katie Williams (Carson), Alex Mitchell, Carley Mitchell, Cole Mitchell (Alexa), and Keira Russell. He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Meri-Blake, Maverick, Morgan, Leighton, and Brexley.

Following a private family graveside service, a memorial service celebrating Rodney's life will be held at Embrace Church. In keeping with Rodney's love for his Tennessee Volunteers, he requested that everyone wear Tennessee orange to the memorial service as a celebration of a life well lived.

In honor of Rodney's love for life and his heart for serving others, memorial donations may be made to Center of Hope, P.O. Box 183, Forest, MS 39074.
