Dennis joined the Army after completing school and served in the Vietnam War, he received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After leaving the Army, he migrated to Mississippi and became a Long-Haul Driver for Frito Lay where he retired. Dennis was a Mason and he served on the Pelahatchie Fire Department as a First Responder, which was his favorite past time. He loved fishing, playing golf, watching Nascar and above all he loved his coffee in the morning during the day and at night. He loved making his daily rounds visiting with family and friends. He was always willing to drop what he was doing to help someone any day and anytime. He was loved and thought highly of in his community, which he loved dearly.
Papa D was a daddy, a papaw, a brother and a friend to all who came in contact with him. He had a smile and a laughter that was contagious. But his best love went to his girls, which he text every morning to say “Good Morning” and to tell them he loved them.
Papa D was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne and his mother, Jeanie McNeer. He leaves behind 4 daughters: Heather Thompson of Flowood, MS, M.J. (Donovan) Irby of Morton, MS, Cindy Drew of Flowood, MS, Dennise Buie-Whitehead of Jackson, MS; 1 brother, Richard Oates; 1 sister, Naomi Burrous of Topeka, KS; 8 grandchildren, Matthew (Hayley) Massey, Reagan Irby, Mallory Irby, JP Irby, Bella Irby, Sarah Drew, Ryan Drew, Skylar Niclole and honorary grandson Austin Brunt as well as 6 great grandchildren.
