Mr. George Gray Nutt

If you asked anyone who knew George Nutt what kind of man he was, you would probably hear a long list- because George was many things to many people. A builder, a leader, a teacher, a faithful friend to anyone in need. Like Our Lord, George was a carpenter; he built homes for so many. Some of those homes were built with lumber and brick, while others were built for others throughout central Mississippi. He built his home for his family with his prayers and through his Christian example.

Born May 2, 1946, to R.S. and Mozelle Nutt, he was the youngest of seven children. He was a devoted father to Amy and Rebecca, and a beloved grandfather to his five grandchildren. He graduated from Morton High School in 1964, where he was elected friendliest, an adjective that remained with him throughout his life. In his youth, he was an avid bird hunter, baseball player, and golfer. He loved the great outdoors and spent his time hunting, fishing, or attending a ball game whenever he got the chance.

George was a devoted father and grandfather and could regularly be found cheering for his family. He coached softball and basketball and helped with youth activities. George was the kind of man who showed up. He never missed a sporting event for his children and grandchildren, never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and never passed up the chance to brag shamelessly about his grandchildren. Like his mother, Mozelle, George was a sports fan. In his hospital bed, he asked only two questions. How everyone else was doing, and how Ole Miss baseball was playing.

George can be accurately described as a volunteer. He has served in Scott County for all his life. He was a member of the National Guard. He loved helping at Quiet Waters Ministries, a charity that helps serve the special needs community. Last year, he retired from the hospital board of directors of Ochsner Scott Regional, where he was the longest-serving member of the board of directors. George also volunteered at his beloved Bethlehem Baptist church, where he was a member for his entire life. He served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and a host of many committees. He donated his time and labor maintaining his church, either with his carpentry or his ministry. He was a devout reader of Sacred Scripture and always sat at the end of his pew to save room for the rest of his family.

George Nutt will be remembered by all as a representation of Christ-like love. He was slow to anger, quick to forgiveness, generous with both time and money, and could tell a story. He was an exemplary father, grandfather, and friend, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He passed away on June 6, 2026, surrounded by family and the sounds of his Ole Miss baseball team winning a trip to Omaha. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Elizabeth Smith, and his siblings Wayne Nutt, Billy Zac Nutt, Larry Nutt, Sara Love Hickman, and Iwana Smith.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Nutt Harris, his grandchildren, Daniel Herbert (D.H.) Dew, George Bradley Dew, Anna Mac Dew, Hunter Parker, and Maggie Smith; and his sister Dora Helen Davis.
