Pelahatchie

Docie Faye Joyner Edwards, 84, a resident of Pelahatchie, Mississippi, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 5, 2023 surrounded by her family and loving caregiver and nurse Cathy Brown Berry. Visitation services will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, at Wolf Funeral Home in Morton, Mississippi. There will be a private family graveside service Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

Mrs. Edwards was born September 9, 1938 in Brandon, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Thelma Holmes Joyner and George Dewey Joyner.  Mrs. Edwards was a graduate of Brandon High School and Hinds Junior College.  She married her loving husband Johnathan Richard Edwards III ("John") on March 26, 1959. She taught elementary school many years, including teaching at Brandon Academy.  She spent the majority of her career as a business owner/operator of Docie's Family Store in downtown Pelahatchie, Mississippi. Docie later babysat children in her home and loved that job the most. Docie and her husband John were two of the major starting stockholders of East Rankin Academy, where she volunteered many hours, and she and husband John followed their children Ricky, Due and Sam; and later grandchildren Joey, Morgan and Peyton to many football, basketball, soccer games, or any school activities, often sitting on the front rows of any sports events, yelling the loudest for a big Patriot win! She was a faithful member of Pelahatchie Baptist Church, where she was active in teaching Girls in Action and Sunday School classes most of her life.  Docie loved to read and was an active member of the Friends of the Pelahatchie Public Library.  She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Eastern Star. Pelahatchie was her loving home, and she loved the small-town community life so much, including a love for the Town's Muscadine Day.  She would open her store building up to friends and family those Saturdays. Her last beautiful, vivid dreams were of her family and friends gathering and greeting the sweet town members and friends as they all enjoyed the numerous annual Muscadine Day events. In their later life, both Docie and John started a daffodil farm on some of their land planting over 10,000 bulbs which multiply and blossom for years to come.

She is survived by her daughter Due Edwards McKinion (Johnny); son, Sam Edwards (Holli); daughter-in-law, Lisa Griffin Edwards.  Grandchildren are Joey Edwards (Laura); Morgan McKinion; Peyton McKinion; and Dixie Edwards.  Great-grandchildren are Mae, JR, and Luke Edwards.  Brother Rodney Joyner (Barbara); nephews Richard Joyner (Pam); and Steve Joyner (Wendi). Brother-in-law Tommy Edwards (Debbie); sister-in-law Pat Edwards Tisdale (Robert); sister-in-law Kathy Edward Jones (Milton); brother-in-law Peter Richardson; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thelma and George Dewey Joyner; her loving husband John R. Edwards; her son, Ricky Edwards; her sister, Joann Joyner; and her sister-in-law Jo Frances Edwards. Sam Edwards, Joey Edwards, Johnny McKinion, Peyton McKinion, Cullen Calhoun, Steve Joyner and Richard Joyner served as pallbearers. Brother Spencer Sullivan officiated the funeral visitation.  Brother Ted Giordano officiated the graveside services.  Sarah Webb, family friend, sang the funeral.
