John Clayton Abel, 77, of Homewood passed from this world on August 19, 2023. Clayton was born on April 19, 1946 in Sebastopol. Following his marriage in 1965, Clayton relocated to Homewood, where he lived up until his passing. Clayton is survived by his wife, Shirley, his brother, Bill (Charlotte) Abel, his children, Deborah (Pamela) Abel and Joseph Clayton (Sharon) Abel, his grandchildren, Joshua (Amber) Clayton and Crystal Abel, and his great grandson, Janson Clayton Abel, as well as a host of extended family and friends. Clayton is preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Grady Abel, and his siblings- Jerry, Jesse, J.R., Inez Thrash, Barbara Ellis, and Elsie Posey.

Clayton proudly served his community through his involvement with the Homewood Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped to found in addition to serving on the board of directors.

Clayton was a member of Luther Chapel Lutheran Church, and served as President of the Council from 1967 until his passing. Many know Clayton from his work at Forest Packing Company. Following his work at Forest Packing Company, Clayton and Shirley dedicated themselves to establishing the family farm. Clayton was known for his loving and kind spirit. His memory will live on through his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at Luther Chapel Lutheran Church located on Wicker Mill Road in Homewood. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 6:00 PM until Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Services will take place on at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 26, 2023. At Luther Chapel Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers include Danny Thrash, Mark Abel, Marshall Boykin, Ted Davidson, Brandon Hutchinson, Tanner Munn, and Mark May. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Homewood Volunteer Fire Department.
