Mr. Billy Tom Ward of Lena, MS, age 84, passed away on July 28, 2016 at the Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS following an extended illness. Visitation will be held on Saturday July 30, 2016 from 2:30PM until 5:00PM and again on Sunday July 31, 2016 from 12:00PM until 1:50PM at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday July 31, 2016 at 2:00PM at the Wolf Funeral Services Chapel in Morton, MS. Officiating will be Rev. Paul Jordan and Rev. John Sharp. Burial will follow in the Lena Cemetery. Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS is in charge of the arrangements.
Billy Tom was born on February 14, 1932 in Lena, MS to Luna Dumas and Henry Ward. He grew up in a loving family and he attended Lena School. Upon graduating in 1950, he entered the Navy in December and served until 1954. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education in 1965. Billy Tom remained an avid fan and contributor to USM for life and was also a member of the Circle of Champions.
During his adult life, Billy Tom began his career as a teacher and basketball coach at Lena High School until 1963. He taught at Carthage High School and Junior High School from 1963 until 1966. In 1966, he became the Principal of Lena School for one year. Following being the Principal, he became the Title One Coordinator and Assistant Superintendent of Carthage School District from 1967 until 1987. In 1987 he became the Title One Coordinator and Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent until 1989. Retiring in 1989 from the school system, Billy Tom served as the Drug Free Coordinator and personnel director from 1989 until 1996. He served as the Mayor of Lena, MS from July of 1973 to 1981.
Billy Tom was a world traveler. He traveled to many different countries and all fifty states over the years. Traveling, good food, and going to ball games was his passion.
On August 10, 1994, Billy Tom married the love of his life, Connie Townsend of Morton, MS, and they were married for twenty-two years.
A devoted Christian, Billy Tom was a member of Lena Baptist Church, where he served in many different roles over his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Ward, seven loving cousins, and a host of loving friends and family.
